Harvard Graphics 98 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I install Web Publish on Windows 95 and NT?
A: During the install of Harvard Graphics 98 - if you are installing under Windows 95 or 98, or NT as Administrator, just click Yes when asked if you want to install the Web Publish features.

After installing Harvard Graphics 98 - If you said No to the install of Web Publishing, you can install later by clicking "Install Web Publishing Wizard" on the Harvard Graphics Start menu.

Windows NT (User) - After installing the rest of Harvard Graphics, have your Administrator log on with Administrator rights, then double click C:\…HGW98\wpfull15.exe

Q: How do I use the Web Publish feature of Harvard Graphics 98?
A: You can publish a presentation on an Internet or Intranet site, so that colleagues and customers can see it. Harvard Graphics 98 includes Harvard Webshow (which uses Microsoft's Web Publishing Wizard) for publishing files to the Internet, so you do not have to know about HTML, FTP or any other details of Web publishing. All you need is publishing rights to a web address.

You will need to create a new subfolder on your Website to publish each Harvard Graphics presentation.

Note - Publishing to an existing address will overwrite any previous Harvard Graphics presentation at that address. It also overwrites any "index.html" file already there, making existing files in that folder inaccessible.

Please read the section in Harvard Graphics 98 Help entitled "Publishing a Presentation on the Web", and the other questions/answers in this FAQ.

Q: How do other people view my presentation on my Website?
A: Your audience need not own a copy of Harvard Graphics. After you have published your presentation, your audience uses Netscape Navigator (v3.0 or later) or Internet Explorer (v3.0 or later) to browse to the page. The browser uses Harvard WebShow viewer (a plug-in for Netscape, an Active-X viewer for IE). The first time it is needed, Internet Explorer installs Harvard WebShow automatically. Users of Netscape Navigator download and install Harvard WebShow (969KB).

Harvard WebShow is free. Copies of the two versions are also included on your Harvard Graphics 98 CD, in folder "WebShow." You may distribute them freely.

Q: What operating systems is Harvard WebShow viewer available for?
A: Harvard WebShow viewer is available for versions of Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer running on Windows 95, 98 and NT4.0.

Q: What files does a Harvard Graphics presentation put on my website?
A: After a Harvard Graphics presentation has been published, the folder you made for it on your website contains three files:

- index.html the HTML commands to tell the viewer's browser how to display the page.

- embossed.gif the background picture.

- hgpres.pr4 your presentation (it must always keep this name, therefore there can be only one presentation per folder.)

Q: Can I make changes to the background page of my Harvard Graphics presentation on the Web?
A: The presentation is published automatically with a simple background page. You can make links to it as usual from any other page. To navigate away from the presentation, use the Back button on your browser. If you know how to write HTML code, you can do whatever you want with the background page - add links, text, audio, a company logo, change the background color, etc. Just retain the existing commands that display hgpres.pr4. See "Modifying the Web Page" in Harvard Graphics Help.

Q: How do I delete a Harvard Graphics presentation from my Website?
A: Simply publish a new presentation to the same folder. (If you have nothing new to say in this folder, your new presentation can be a single slide saying "Under Construction" or "Test Page.")

If you want to delete the whole folder, consult your Website documentation.

Q: I published my presentation successfully, but when I browse to the URL, I get a "page not found" error, or just a list of files.
A: First, make sure you type the URL exactly as you typed it when you published it. (URLs are case-sensitive). Another possibility - your Webserver may not be set up to recognize index.html as the default filename. (A file with the default filename has to exist in every folder) Harvard Graphics uses "index.html." Another common default filename is "home.html." Look in your Website documentation for the correct default filename for your site. On your local hard drive, look in C:/… /Hgw98/WebPub, and rename "index.html" to "home.html." Run Web Publish again.

Q: Internet Explorer users can see my presentation, but Netscape Navigator users just see a gray box displaying the "WebShow" logo.
A: Netscape Navigator/Harvard WebShow is not recognizing the .pr4 file type. Ask your Web Provider to configure the Web server where your files reside to associate the .pr4 file extension to the MIMED_MIME type application/x-harvard-graphics.

(On a computer with Harvard Graphics on it, you may get a message from Netscape Navigator about opening HG to look at the file. This message is Navigator attempting to open the .pr4 file locally after failing to get the correct association from the server, but nothing actually happens - just click Cancel to get rid of the message.)

Q: The install of Harvard WebShow for Internet Explorer is not completely automatic on my system. It's asking me if I want to download other files from Microsoft's site. What's going on?
A: If this is the first ActiveX component you are installing into your copy of Internet Explorer, it may need to update some files. Also, Harvard WebShow checks the version number of certain system files (.DLLs). So if you see a prompt about DLLs or ActiveX components to be downloaded from Microsoft.com, go ahead and click Yes.

Q: I'm using Internet Explorer Version 3.0, and Harvard WebShow didn't install, instead I got a message about a possible security violation. How do I reduce my security settings?
A: The best solution here is to upgrade to a more recent version of Internet Explorer, and take advantage of the enhanced security features. If you choose to stay with Internet Explorer version 3.0, on the View menu, click Options/Security/Active Content/Safety Level, and set the security at Medium. Next time you browse to a Harvard Graphics presentation, Harvard WebShow will install. You can set the security level back to High afterwards.

Q: I want to hold a meeting or training session with remote participants. How do I set it up?
A: Using the Internet or your company's Intranet is a great way to save on travel time and costs for meetings and training courses. Publish your presentation, set up a conference phone call, and hold a meeting with participants anywhere in the world.

Send an e-mail announcing your meeting and the URL of the presentation. Publish a test presentation so that everyone can check out the process, and have Harvard Webshow installed in their browser.

Once a person has downloaded the presentation, they need not stay logged on to the Internet, (unless of course you are also using other Internet conferencing programs such as internet phone or a chalkboarding program.) A copy of the presentation file is held in the browser's cache memory.

If your information is company confidential, you need to be aware of security - on the Internet anyone can see your presentation, if they know the URL.

If any of your participants are using dialup connections, keep your presentation small. A 200KB file will take approximately one minute to download using a 28.8 modem.

Q: What if I already have Microsoft's Web Publishing Wizard?
A: Harvard Webshow uses Microsoft's Web Publishing Wizard. Its OK to install it twice, there is no need to. When asked if you want to install the Web Publish section of Harvard Graphics, click No. Harvard Graphics will find your existing copy, and you can go ahead and click "Publish to Web" on the Harvard Graphics File menu as usual.

Q: What file format does Harvard Graphics 98 use?
A: Harvard Graphics98 uses exactly the same file formats (.pr4 and .st4) as Harvard Graphics 4.0, and can also open and save to other Harvard Graphics formats, as follows:

Open -Harvard Graphics for Windows 1.0-3.0 Presentation (.prs) and Style (.sty)

Harvard Graphics 3.0 (DOS) Charts (*.ch3) and Show (*.sh3)

Save - Harvard Graphics for Windows 1.0-3.0 Presentation (*.prs) and Style (.sty)

Q: Can I install more than one version of Harvard Graphics for Windows on my computer?
A: No, this is not a supported configuration. Earlier versions of Harvard Graphics should be uninstalled before installing Harvard Graphics 98. If you have versions 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0 for Windows, you will be prompted about uninstalling them. To uninstall Harvard Graphics 4.0, use Add/Remove programs in Windows Control Panel. If you currently have two versions installed, (for example 4.0 and 98) you will need to uninstall both, and reinstall Harvard Graphics 98.
